Evening 10-minute routine
晚间十分钟

Safety before anything
Safety before anything
The evening routine has more steps than the morning one, so the cautions matter more.
- Masks and steaming are not combined. Do one or the other, and never on the same evening.
- Steaming is not used on red, itchy or broken skin, and the face stays at least 30 cm above the water. facial-steaming sets out burns, broken capillaries and the skin that should not steam.
- Patch test any new preparation on the inner arm for 24 hours.
- Pregnancy: the same rule as the morning routine. Face points only, light pressure, and no body points.
- No needling. Nothing here involves a needle, and cosmetic-acupuncture explains why that is a practitioner procedure.
- Stop if the skin stings, burns or is red the next morning.
What this routine is
The evening version of the section's routines. It keeps the same order, clean, press, finish, and adds one traditional preparation at the end, chosen by the pattern.
It is deliberately short. The tradition treats consistency as the point, and a routine done most evenings is better than a longer one done once.
The ten minutes
- Minutes 1 and 2: wash. Remove the day with lukewarm water and a plain cleanser. No cloth, no scrubbing, no hot water. herbal-face-masks describes the traditional washes.
- Minutes 3 to 6: press. The fuller sequence from facial-acupressure: Yintang, Cuanzhu, Sizhukong, Sibai, Chengqi, Quanliao, Dicang, Chengjiang. Light pressure, ten to twenty seconds each, and nothing on the eyeball.
- Minutes 7 and 8: move. Two or three slow passes with the fingers or a gua sha tool, from the centre outward and down the neck. gua-sha-face gives the directions and the skin that should not be worked.
- Minutes 9 and 10: one traditional finish. Either a thin mask as described on herbal-face-masks, left on for ten to fifteen minutes and rinsed while still moist, or a short steam as described on facial-steaming. Choose one.
Afterwards. Apply a light oil or plain cream if the skin feels dry, and note how the skin looks the next morning. That note is the traditional way of judging whether the routine suits the pattern.
When not to do it
Skip the routine on an evening when the skin is inflamed, after sunburn, after a cosmetic procedure, or when a skin condition is flaring. On those evenings, wash gently and stop there. If the skin is red the morning after, the routine was too much for it.
What the evidence says
No verified human study of a TCM intervention for the condition on this page. Editorial policy
Traditional use. These are the human studies we found on PubMed (searched October 2026). There are none for this routine. Like the morning routine, this is a structure assembled from traditional practices and has no trial behind it. Each source page describes the reasoning and the limits. Nothing here has been shown to change the skin.
Common questions
Mask or steam?
One, not both, and not on the same evening. The steaming page explains why the skin that steams should not also be masked that night.
Is ten minutes enough?
The tradition treats consistency as more important than length. A short routine done most evenings is the aim.
Can I do it if my skin is sensitive?
Only with the gentler options, and with a patch test first. Read the sensitive skin page and the steaming cautions before starting.
